Meteora is a group of monasteries on the summits of vertical rock formations in Northern Greece. In 1988 it was recognized for its outstanding value as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a must-see when visiting mainland Greece. Meteora moves you in so many ways, emotionally, naturally, and culturally.

If you're planning on spending more than one day in Meteora, excellent! You could see Meteora in one day, but we suggest you go for at least 2 days to be able to enjoy all Meteora has to offer fully.

Here's a perfect itinerary that includes viewpoints and hidden gems!

Meteora, Greece

Day 1 -

6:00 AM: SUNRISE

Wake up early to catch the sunrise. 
Arrive at Meteora Observation Deck 30 minutes before sunrise.

8:30 AM: BREAKFAST

Head back to the hotel for breakfast since the monasteries don't open until later. Our hotel Divani Meteora Hotel is located only an 8-minute drive from the monasteries, so it made it easy to go back and forth.

9:30 AM TO 3:00 PM: EXPLORE MONASTERIES

Check the hours and days of activity for each monastery since they have different opening hours. Don't forget to bring snacks with you since there is no food around the monasteries. For full monasteries and travel guide click here!

9:30 am to11:30 pm: Monastery of Holy Trinity

Our favorite monastery in Meteora.
Entrance Fee: 3 Euro.
Opening hours: Summer: Fridays-Wednesdays 09:00 to 17:00. The monastery stays closed on Thursday.
Winter: Fridays-Wednesdays 10:00 to 16:00. The monastery stays closed on Thursday.
Amount of steps: To reach the monastery, you must cross a pedestrian path downhill until the foot of the cliff and then climb 145 steps.

11:30 Meteora Panorama (Viewpoint)

This viewpoint is located between the Holy Trinity Monastery and the St. Stephan Monastery.

11:40 pm to 12:40 pm: Monastery of Stephen

This was our least favorite monastery, but you can easily cover it within an hour or less.

Entrance Fee: 3 Euro.
Opening hours: Summer: Tuesday-Sunday 09:00 to 13:30 and 15:30-17:30. The monastery stays closed on Monday.
Winter: Tuesday-Sunday 09:30 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 17:00. The monastery stays closed on Monday.
Amount of steps: There are no steps here. has the most relaxed hike of all the Meteora monasteries. All you have to do is cross a slightly shaky wooden bridge.

12:50 am: View in Meteora (Viewpoint)

While driving from Monastery of Stephen towards Monastery of Roussanou, you'll see a small observation point on the right side of the road.

1:00 pm to 3:00 pm: Monastery of Roussanou

Entrance Fee: 3 Euro.
Opening hours: Summer: Thursday-Tuesday 09:00 to 16:00. The monastery stays closed on Wednesdays.
Winter: Thursday-Tuesday 09:00 to 14:00. The monastery stays closed on Wednesday.
Amount of steps: 150 steps.

3:00 PM: KALAMBAKA

Head back towards Kalambaka, and explore the town square.

5:00 PM: WINE TASTING

Go wine tasting at Tsililis Winery and Distillery

6:00 PM: DINNER

Eat dinner at Restaurant Meteora which has great local food.

Day 2 -

8:00 AM: Breakfast

Wake up, and eat breakfast in the hotel.

9:00 AM TO 4:00 PM: EXPLORE MONASTERIES

Check the hours and days of activity for each monastery since they have different opening hours. Don't forget to bring snacks with you since there is no food around the monasteries.

9:00 - 11:00: Monastery of Great Meteoron

Entrance Fee: 3 Euro.
Opening hours: Summer: Wednesdays-Mondays 09:00 to 15:00. The monastery stays closed on Tuesdays.
Winter: Friday-Monday 09:00 to 14:00. The monastery stays closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Amount of steps: 270 steep and winding steps take you to the top of the plateau. It is rather difficult to climb.

11:00-11:15: View of Varlamm Monastery (Viewpoint)

Park at the Great Metreoron parking lot and walk back down the road towards Varlaam. Turn right out onto the grassy verge between Varlaam and Great Meteoron and walk down the path below.

11:15-13:15: Monastery of Varlaam

This monastery is one of our favorites.

Entrance Fee: 3 Euro.
Opening hours: Summer: Saturday-Thursday 09:00 to 15:00. The monastery stays closed on Fridays.
Winter: Saturday-Wednesday 09:00 to 14:00. The monastery stays closed on Thursday and Friday.
Amount of steps: 195 steps.

13:15-13:45 View of Varlaam & Rousanou Monasteries (Viewpoint)

If you park your car at Varlamm and walk in the opposite direction, you'll a path that leads to this really cute spot where you can see the view of Varlaam monastery, and if you are daring enough to walk on the left side of the path, you'll find a gorgeous view of Rousanou Monastery.

14:00 - 15:30: Monastery of St. Nicholas

Entrance Fee: 3 Euro.
Opening hours: Summer: Saturday-Thursday 09:00 to 17:00. The monastery stays closed on Friday.
Winter: Saturday-Thursday 09:00 to 15:00. The monastery stays closed on Friday.
Amount of steps: You need to climb a steep hill, followed by 300 steps.

15:30 Meteora Rocks:

While driving from Varlamm to St. Nicholas, we found this beautiful spot and decided to stop and take a photo here. There are quite a few parking spots here, but it still doesn't have a name.

4:00 PM: TRIKALA

Drive to Trikala and explore the town and grab lunch Don't miss Trinkala Fort.

6:00 PM: SUNSET IN METEORA

Watch the sunset from Sunset rock. This was our favorite spot to watch the sunset, and I guess others agree since this spot is also known as Sunset rock. It isn't difficult to get to but do know that the rock I'm standing on in this photo isn't connected to the viewpoint, and you'll need to jump a little to reach it.

There are 3 parking spots (max 5 cars can fit in here) so arrive early.

8:00 PM: DINNER

Have dinner with a local pint at Pub 38 Kalambaka.
